This handbook is designed to acquaint all parents with current policies and procedures. The Child Development Lab (CDL) reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to revise these policies and procedures as needed. Parents receive a handbook during enrollment.

The University of Missouri Child Development Laboratory (CDL) is an educational setting for community children; and a teaching and research laboratory for University students, faculty and staff.

The CDL is a full-day, full-year teacher-training lab school of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) within the College of Human Environmental Sciences. The CDL is licensed and accredited.

The CDL serves about 96 families with children from six weeks of age through third grade. Promoting high quality child care in a model setting is a primary goal.

Most of the programs are designed as a full-year, full-day, early childhood program and serves the purpose of full-time employed parents best. Red Door Part-Day Preschool runs with the Columbia Public School schedule and is closed in the summer and when Columbia Public School is closed.

Although children may stay for 10 hours in the full-day programs, the CDL staff and administration recommend a 9-hour day maximum for all children, especially for infants and toddlers.

Each room has at least three staff members (Blue Door has five full-time teachers). MU work study students, practicum students, volunteers and other students also spend time in the classroom to provide extra one-on-one interactions.

A variety of family and child needs are met through the Child Development Laboratory while college students from several departments are learning from first-hand experience how to become better teachers.
