Welcome work study students, volunteers and student teachers to HDFS 3500, 3700, 3710, and 3720!

As part of your HDFS coursework you will be working in the Child Development Laboratory, which is licensed by the state and accredited through Missouri Accreditation. Students will be required to spend five (3500) and seven (3700, 3710 and 3720) hours per week (additional hours per week required during summer) and will need large blocks of time available between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. (excluding 2-3 p.m.) to accommodate this requirement. During this course you will complete numerous projects that may require additional evening and weekend blocks of time (e.g. setting up classroom materials, room environments, etc.). Please see your advisor regarding a recommended course load when taking a CDL lab course.

In order to student teach in the lab, you must comply with certain requirements set forth by the Missouri Department of Health, Bureau of Child Care. All students must have the following documents on file before starting lab. Lab hours begin approximately one week after the first day of class, but we strongly suggest that you turn in your documents to the CDL office (31 Stanley) before your first day of class.

YOU MAY NOT BEGIN LAB UNTIL ALL PAPERWORK IS COMPLETED.

  • Family Care Safety Registry: In order to work with children, you must be included in the Family Care Safety Registry. This costs $9 and requires one source of documentation with your social security number on it. Please make a copy of your Social Security Card or driver's license (if your social security number is on it). The Department of Health will also accept a U.S. Military card or Medicare card with social security number. Fill out the missouri registry form: Effective August 28, 2007 the Missouri Registry will cost $9.00 and bring in the copy of one of the above mentioned articles along with your $9 (check made payable to "Department of Health"), cash is not accepted, and turn into the secretary in the main CDL office (31 Stanley).
  • Health Physical and TB Test: All students must have documentation that they are healthy and free of tuberculosis. A tuberculin skin test must be administered; it takes two days to receive results. Full-time MU students may receive physicals and TB tests free of charge from Student Health (882-7481) but will need to schedule an appointment with an expected wait time of one week. TB tests are also administered for $15 at the Boone County Health Department (1005 W. Worley) every day except Thursday; call (573) 874-7345 for details. TB tests expire after one year. Please use the designated health form and make sure it is signed by a physician.
  • Food Handler Certification: In order to handle food, you must have proof that you attended a food handler class. Classes are held by the City of Columbia three times per month (874-7346) which expire after three years and by the University (882-7018) which expire after one year. City three-year certification costs $10; if you are planning on taking the full-sequence of HDFS courses you may want to get the three-year certification offered by the city. Consult the Food Handler Cards page for a schedule. If you are planning on attending a University class, do it now because classes are not offered during the interim or at the beginning of the semester. Both classes also tend to fill up quickly; get in early!
  • Nametag: In order to work in the room, you will need to wear a nametag. Nametags are provided in the rooms.
  • Appropriate Dress: Please fill out the appropriate dress form and turn in with the rest of your required paperwork.

Please submit paperwork to the CDL office before the semester begins. If you have questions about the required documentation, please call the CDL main office at (573) 882-4318.
