Enrollment is open to children in the community age 2½ to 5 years with the goal to have a well-rounded, diverse group of children representative of the population of Columbia. The CDL reserves the right to enroll children based on sex, race, ethnicity, special needs and low-income for the purposes of high quality teacher training. CDL Lead Teacher, Yellow Door
My name is Monica Poindexter. I have known I wanted to be a teacher since I was six years old! When I turned 18, I began working with children. I have taught in several preschools in Columbia, Fulton and Wellsville. I graduated with my Bachelor of Education in the early 2000’s. I taught second grade for two years before returning to teaching early childhood. I began working here in the fall of 2011 as a teacher in Blue Door. I received my Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education in 2015. I moved to Yellow Door as the Lead Teacher in 2016.
I love teaching and am a big believer in the growth mindset; that we can learn what we desire to learn! I help the children in my room discover the love and joy of learning and help each child grow and develop! Yellow Door uses Project Construct as our curriculum model. Project Construct follows the belief that children will learn what by doing what interests them. We follow their interests to create in depth studies of topics of interest to the children. For example, we have just completed a five-month project on community helpers. We teach through the environment, play and direct teaching all of the content areas children need to learn as they reach school age while we explore the topic of study.
CDL Assistant Teacher, Red Door
My name is Brenda York and I am the Assistant Instructor in Yellow Door. I have my undergraduate degree from MU in HDFS, having done my student teaching the CDL many years ago.
